Eat, sip, repeat: the streets that feed Pamplona

Pamplona isn’t only about running bulls, it’s about running into good food, loud laughter, and moments that taste like everyday life.

If you want to understand this city beyond the postcards, start with its streets. Three of them, to be precise: Navarrería, San Nicolás, and Estafeta.

Each has its own flavor and rhythm: together they tell the story of Pamplona through the people who eat, drink, and live here.

Calle de la Navarrería — Where Chaos Tastes Like Calamari

In the heart of the old town, Calle de la Navarrería buzzes with life, street musicians, students on a break, the smell of fried calamari floating through the air.

Here, you’ll find La Mejillonera, the kind of place where everyone eats standing up, napkins fly, and plates disappear faster than you can say “bocadillo de calamares.” The sandwich is legendary: warm bread, crispy calamari, and a generous spread of alioli that never stays where it should. Honestly, it’s the best calamari sandwich I’ve ever had. If you still have room, try their patatas bravas too, you’ll go crazy for them!

It’s loud, it’s crowded, and it’s glorious. No frills, no reservations — just real food and real people. Order a caña (a regular beer — or better, a cañón, a large one, if you’re feeling bold), squeeze yourself into the crowd (trust me, there’s a lot of it), and let the chaos take over. You’ll leave smelling like fried squid and happiness.

Vibe: pure student energy, a little messy, a lot of laughter, and the comfort of knowing you’ve found the real thing.

Pro tip: don’t wear white as the alioli always wins. Speaking from experience (aaaahhhh).

Calle San Nicolás — The Art of the Pintxo

Walk a few minutes and you’ll hit Calle San Nicolás, one of Pamplona’s most iconic food streets.

 

This is where you’ll discover Río Vermutería, a bar that has been serving pintxos since the ’60s and still feels like a well-kept local secret. Its “huevo”, a delicate fried egg wrapped in creamy béchamel, lightly breaded and golden on the outside, is pure heaven. Crispy, soft, and perfectly balanced, it’s the kind of bite that stays in your mind long after you’ve finished it. Pair it with a glass of vermouth or local red wine, and stand by the counter like a true Pamplonés. 

Personally, I could relive the first time I tasted it over and over again, it was a real dream. And honestly, every time I eat it, it still feels that way. Around you, conversations overlap, glasses clink, and the rhythm of Pamplona’s social life plays out right in front of you. There’s no rush here: the whole point is to stay a while to talk, taste, and let the atmosphere sink in.

Calle Estafeta for cheap drinks and loud nights

By the time the sun starts to fade, there’s only one street to go: Estafeta, the narrow, cobbled path famous for the San Fermín bull run and infamous among students for pre-drinks that last all night.

Here, Bar Cerveceria La Estafeta serves the cheapest tinto de verano in town and somehow it tastes better for it. It’s simple: a few euros, a tall glass of red wine and soda, a small pinchos, and friends gathered before heading wherever the night leads. It’s basically the hangout for university students, especially us exchange ones!

This is where every evening begins, on the sidewalk, leaning against the wall, or even right in the middle of the street, while music spilling from open doors. You won’t find gourmet plates or fancy cocktails here, but you’ll find the heart of Pamplona’s nightlife: spontaneous, unpretentious and warm.

Vibe: pre-party excitement, clinking glasses, cheap laughter, and that electric feeling that something fun is about to happen.

Budget tip: €3,00 for a drink

Each of these streets has its own heartbeat:

  • Navarrería warms you up, the perfect spot for a quick bite or an early aperitivo, loud, flavorful, and full of student chaos.

  • San Nicolás slows you down, where time stretches over conversation, vermouth, and good company.

  • Estafeta keeps you up, wild, spontaneous and alive long after sunset.

Together, they’re not just places to eat, they’re chapters of the same story, written in flavors, laughter and late-night memories.

So come hungry, come curious, and don’t just eat, live the vibe!
